GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
Hobe Sound Christian Academy requires the successful completion of an academic program in adherence to the requirements of the State of Florida.
Each student graduating from Hobe Sound Christian Academy must complete one year as a full-time student.
The Academy has established the following graduation requirements:
- As of 2004-2005, Hobe Sound Christian Academy graduates must complete 26 credits. One credit is earned for successful completion of a course which meets 5 days a week, 50 minutes a day, for 36 weeks. All students at HSCA take 1/2 credit of Bible each year, as well as the Bible-centered courses described in the following paragraphs.
- Required subjects for students are 2 credits of Bible, 4 credits of English, 3 credits of social studies (U.S. History, World History, Economics/Civics), 3 credits of math, 3 credits of science, 2 years of foreign language, 1/2 credit of life management skills, 1/2 credit of physical education, 1/2 credit of performing fine arts (speech, music, art), and 1/2 credit of practical arts (business, home economics). Elective credits must be chosen to make the total of 26 credits.
- Those planning to enter Florida public colleges must take three years of math at the Algebra I and above levels, and must take four electives chosen from the areas of English, math, science, social science or foreign language. Students who plan to enter college in another state should write the college of their choice concerning specific required courses.
- All credits must be completed and the graduates must have at least a 2.00 GPA to participate in graduation exercises.
Any student who has not completed any correspondence work by the end of January will not have his (her) name published on the baccalaureate and commencement programs and will jeopardize his (her) possibility of participating in the graduation ceremonies.
TRANSCRIPT EVALUATION
Hobe Sound Christian Academy will evaluate transcripts according to Florida educational requirements. Other states' transcripts will be given full credit as transferred.
Foreign transcripts will be evaluated by the time in each class and the days the student attended that class. For instance, a student attending a math class three days a week for fifty minutes would receive 1/2 credit. Credits would be given on a fractional basis unless the student attended the lull week for fifty minutes per class period.
DROPPING SUBJECTS
Students will not be allowed to change their schedule or drop a course after the end of the first full week of school or at the end of the first week of second semester. This applies to all classes, except for private music lessons.
FAILING A COURSE
If any subject is failed, the semester's work in that subject must be repeated in order to get credit for it.
Credit will be denied to any student missing more than 18 days per year or 9 days per semester of any class during the school year. This includes unexcused and excused absences (including being absent part of the day, coming in late, leaving early because of sickness, and doctor and dentist appointments).
If a student fails both grading periods in a semester, he (she) may not take the final examination and failure in the course would be automatic.
Courses may be "made up" by repeating the class at HSCA, going to an approved summer school, or taking an approved correspondence course.
GRADES
Grades are computed on the following scale:
A+ 98-100 A 97-95 A- 94-90 B+ 89-86 B 85-83 B- 82-80 C+ 79-76 C 75-73 C- 72-70 D+ 69-66 D 65-63 D- 62-60 F Below 65
High school grade point averages are computed by semester on a 4-point scale:
A 4 points B 3 points C 2 points D 1 point F 0
Semester exams comprise about 20 percent of the final grade.
SYSTEM OF CONDUCT GRADES
A student's conduct in class is extremely important. Not only will such conduct reflect on his productivity as a student, but will influence others as well. Therefore, the following scale will be used to identify the student's classroom conduct in each report to the parents:
1 - Consistently outstanding
2 - Good
3 - Average
4 - Needs attention and improvement
5 - Unsatisfactory
INCOMPLETE
If a student is given an "incomplete" for a nine-weeks' grade (due to extended excused absence), the work must be made up within 30 days or the student will receive "0" for the work missed.
GRADUATION HONORS
The honors of valedictorian and salutatorian will be given to the students with the highest and second highest grade point average, who have been students at HSCA during their Junior and Senior years and who are not under disciplinary action. A tuition scholarship of $4,000 will be given to the valedictorian who attends Hobe Sound Bible College. A $2,000 scholarship is awarded to the salutatorian who attends HSBC. Any faculty and staff child would be entitled to half the scholarship since their tuition is provided. Honors are computed through the second grading period of the Senior year. The Junior marshal shall be the high school Junior with the highest grade-point average. The marshal must have a record of good discipline.
An Awards Ceremony is held each year. This is a time to honor those who have performed at an exceptionally high level in Christian discipleship, classroom conduct, academic excellence, and Christian service.
ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL
At the close of each grading period there will be posted a list of distinguished students who have attained levels of superior achievement. The Principal's Honor Roll is composed of those students who maintain a 4.0 GPA (no A minuses). The "A" Honor Roll is composed of those students who have all A's in major subjects. The "A & B" Honor Roll is composed of those students who have a combination of A's and B's, with no grade lower than a B. Private music grades are not included in the honor roll calculations.
CONDUCT HONOR ROLL
Students who receive all "1" and "2" conduct grades are recognized for outstanding attitude and conduct.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
Hobe Sound Christian Academy has a local chapter of the National Honor Society. Membership in the Society is based on character, scholarship, leadership and service. To be eligible for membership the student must maintain no less than a 3.0 GPA during his (her) freshman year and first semester of his (her) sophomore year. No student is eligible for membership if he (she) has over ten demerits or below average conduct grades.
Each student is chosen on his (her) own merit — there is no "set number" of inductees each year. Members are encouraged to be of service and to offer positive leadership both before induction and certainly afterward.
